When they had reached the edge of the perimeter on the other side of the slope, Dr.Grosset said to George, “You’ll have to stay here George. If anything happened to you, Lensil would ring my neck instead of me ringing the neck of one of those chickens there. Don’t worry. I’ll be back in a few moments. Now stay here!”

Dr. Grosset made his way slowly toward the chickens, first walking a few steps sideways and then turning and walking a few steps in the other direction, getting ever closer to his quarry as he moved. Just as he was almost close enough to make a fast lunge and grab one of the creatures, a large raptor-like beast rushed from the forest bellowing its roar as it came for the Doctor. Dr. Grosset stumbled backwards and fell on his back, reaching for the gun that he thought he had stuffed under his belt as he fell -- only to find his hand grabbing his shirt instead of the gun.

George, in spite of the fact that he was afraid of almost anything that moved, came running to the defense of the Doctor. As he ran towards the danger that now faced him, he was barking angrily and the loudness of his bark startled both the beast and the Doctor. When he reached the Doctor’s side, he let out a growl that seemed to reverberate in the ground.

To give George a means of deterring predators, Lensil had given him the ability to literally shake the earth with his growl. In the dog’s paws were sensors that detected the resonant frequency of the ground they stood on and this frequency was matched to within one CPS by the amplifiers that were implanted within the dog’s throat. The result being, that when George growled everything close to him that was touching the earth would shake.

The raptor had a puzzled expression on its reptilian face and it cocked its head studying the two creatures before it. When the ground shook, it lowered its head to look at the earth it stood on, dazed by the tingling it felt in its feet.

Dr. Grosset felt it too and though it surprised him as well, he knew it was no substitute for brute strength. He could sense their demise and without deference to his own safety, he yelled, “Run...George...Run!”

Ridi, who was now at the top of the rise, watched the scene unfold. By the time George had begun growling, she had raised the gun, took aim at the creature’s neck, and squeezed the trigger. In the millisecond between the time the trigger had been squeezed and the round fired off, she had time to regret pulling the trigger. The reflexes of the Paladins were lighting fast, but the realization that the bullet would hit Lensil instead of the beast had come an instant too late.

Lensil had managed to pull the defensive post free and was about to plant it back firmly in the ground when he heard George bark. Looking over and seeing what was transpiring to his left, he dropped the post.
